What does Torah mean for followers of Yeshua?

We believe salvation is a gift of grace through faith in Yeshua. Torah is not a ladder by which we earn redemption. Rather, because we have been redeemed, we desire to understand and walk in the instruction God has given.

Torah means instruction

The Hebrew word Torah is often translated as law, but it carries the broader sense of instruction or teaching. Torah reveals the character, wisdom and ways of God and forms the foundation of the biblical story.

We therefore do not begin with the assumption that Torah is something negative from which believers must be rescued.

Yeshua did not come to abolish

Yeshua said He did not come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. We read His teaching within that context and understand obedience as the fruit of faith, not a rival to grace.

That does not mean every command applies to every person in the same way. Scripture itself contains commands for priests, kings, men, women, farmers, judges, those living in the land and the wider community. Faithfulness requires careful application.

Written on the heart

The promise of the New Covenant includes YHVH writing His Torah upon the heart. We therefore understand the work of the Ruach HaKodesh as producing inward faithfulness, not indifference toward God's instruction.

Our aim is not legalism, but discipleship: learning how Yeshua walked and seeking to walk as He walked.
